Oliver Heaviside (1850-1925) transformed electrical engineering, applied mathematics, and theoretical physics. Self-taught, fiercely independent, and often controversial, he reshaped Maxwell’s original theory into the compact vector equations used throughout the world today, revolutionized long-distance telegraphy and telephony, pioneered operational calculus, predicted the conducting layer of the upper atmosphere that now bears his name, and made fundamental contributions to electromagnetic wave propagation, transmission lines, and mathematical physics.
Yet the man himself remains far less well known than his achievements.
The Heaviside Symposium will bring together historians, engineers, physicists, mathematicians, and independent scholars over Martin Luther King, Jr. Day weekend (January 17-18, 2027) for two days devoted to exploring Heaviside’s life, work, and enduring influence. Hosted in the “Rocket City,” Huntsville, Alabama at Signals: The Museum of the Information Explosion, participants will meet in an extraordinary venue surrounded by one of the world’s premier collections of historic communications technology, providing an ideal setting for examining the ideas that shaped the modern information age.

Call for Papers
We invite original papers ranging from historical scholarship to technical analysis. Contributions may examine Heaviside’s scientific work, his relationships with contemporaries, his influence on later developments, or the continuing relevance of his ideas in modern engineering and physics. Suggested topics include (but are not limited to):
Oliver Heaviside (1850–1925): His Life and Times Biography, correspondence, personality, intellectual development, and historical context.
The History of Electromagnetic Theory: Faraday, Maxwell, Heaviside, Hertz, Poynting, FitzGerald, Lodge, Gibbs, Lorentz, and the evolution of classical electromagnetism.
Heaviside’s Scientific and Engineering Contributions: Maxwell's equations, operational calculus, transmission lines, electromagnetic waves, energy flow, impedance, and related advances.
Fields, Energy, and Physical Interpretation: Historical and modern perspectives on electromagnetic fields, energy transport, and competing interpretations of classical electrodynamics.
Legacy in Science and Engineering: Heaviside's influence on electrical engineering, communications, RF and microwave engineering, antenna theory, and applied mathematics.
Related Figures and Ideas: Papers on George Searle (1839–1918), Ivor Catt (1933–2023), and other researchers whose work intersects with Heaviside’s ideas or legacy.
Historical Scholarship and Archival Research: Newly discovered documents, correspondence, publication history, bibliographic studies, and reassessments based on primary sources.
Well-supported Reassessments and Alternative Interpretations: The conference welcomes carefully argued historical or technical papers that challenge prevailing interpretations of Heaviside's work or its later reception. Submissions should engage primary sources, established scholarship, or reproducible technical analysis, and clearly distinguish historical evidence from speculation.
Selected keynote lectures from distinguished scholars (to be announced) will examine both the historical and technical dimensions of Heaviside’s achievements, including his overlooked contributions to physics and the evolution of Maxwellian electromagnetism.
Accepted papers will be published in the symposium proceedings. The proceedings will also include G. F. C. Searle’s long out-of-print biography, Heaviside the Man, making this volume both a permanent scholarly reference and the definitive record of the symposium. Long arm is long.
This conference is something I would have really enjoyed before I retired from electrical engineering to manufacture fountain pen parts.
How does a person register for the conference? I would like to register and submit some papers.
